Forward Healthcare Winners Revealed

The Winners of the Forward Healthcare Awards 2019 have been revealed. 

The Awards evening took place on 25th September online, where the Leading Healthcare Team covered the fantastic finalists before announcing the winners. You can read about the evening on Twitter using #forwardhealthcareawards.

Leading Healthcare would like to congratulate everyone who entered, it took weeks and months to finally select and announce the winners. Here we reveal the winning and highly commended entries:

– Excellence in Communication and Engagement

Winner: Zero Suicide Alliance – Suicide – Let’s Talk campaign. The Zero Suicide Alliance launched a free online suicide prevention course in 2017 aimed at tackling difficult conversations with those in crisis and maybe help save a life. Over 200,000 people have now accessed the training, which has been endorsed by the Prime Minister for all NHS workers.

Highly Commended: NHS North of England Commissioning Support Unit – Savings for over the counter prescribing. Across the NHS in the North East and Cumbria, NECS developed and delivered an approach to support efficiencies around over the counter prescribing. The aims were to raise awareness of prescribing costs and to save costs for prescribing items that patients can easily buy to treat minor ailments. 

Highly Commended: Norfolk Children & Young People’s Health Services – Cambridgeshire Community Service NHS Trust. A thunder clap launch for an NHS self care resource: 7 days to launch JustOneNorfolk.nhs.uk 

– Driving Healthcare Forward – Initiative of the Year 

Winner: Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – The development of a new cardiac assessment unit in the Emergency department at Russell’s Hall Hospital in Dudley.  

Highly Commended: Midlands Partnership Foundation Trust – Paper Health Records Scanning – time reduced by nearly 2000%. The use of RPA at MPFT saves staff approximately 10 hours of work per day, frees up resources within the Health Records team, ensures that clinicians can quickly see the most recent episode of care.

– Creating a Supportive Staff Culture 

Winner: Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Women and Children’s Health – In March 2018 the Women and Children’s Division at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) launched Randomised Coffee Trials (RCTS). Over 80 people joined and the trust matched staff members at random across the division. The Feedback captured 2018 and 2019 was excellent and supports a happy and supportive culture. 

Highly Commended: Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust – Understanding the importance of facilities in providing a safe, effective and responsive service that is both fit for purpose and meets clinical requirements.

– Healthcare Team of the Year 

Winner: Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust– The Mass Clinic – concept and results of a new 18-week care model. The Mass Clinic has led to dramatic reductions in waiting-times and cost-savings. “One-stop-shop” consultant-led care, pre-assessment, surgery-scheduling, and physiotherapy reduces the need for further appointments and lowers patient-anxiety. 

Highly Commended: Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Women and Children’s Health – Multidisciplinary team based at the neonatal intensive care unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

– Acute Sector Innovation

Winner: Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – The GP led ward was a new concept created following recognition that alternative workforce models needed creating to ensure the safe, effective running of additional beds opened during the winter period. 

Highly Commended: Art in Site Reducing Violence & Aggression through Interior Design & Art for Emergency Department, St Thomas’ Hospital. The work for the newly refurbished interior of the Emergency at St Thomas’ Hospital blends art, interior design and information together to bring better patient flow, orientation and a calming atmosphere, thus helping to reduce violence/aggression.

– Community or Primary Care Innovation 

Winner: Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust – Implementation of a full electronic patient record in Gateshead community mental health services; primary and secondary care working in partnership. Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust have digitised and standardised patient records in Community Mental Services. The EMIS system allows clinicians to access patient notes while working in the community.

Highly Commended: Compass Wellbeing CIC #ConnectingPrimaryCare – Recruiting and Retaining GP’s of the Future.

– Acute or Specialist Services Redesign 

Winner: The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust – The JointCare programme at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. JointCare is an optimised pathway based on education, collaboration, wellness and recovery. The majority of our patients now go home just 24 – 48 hours after their joint replacement surgery.

Highly Commended: Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Ketogenic Dietary therapy, used in the management of complex epilepsy is historically initiated in hospital. Commencing therapy at home was successfully implemented and retrospective audit data shows both efficacy and safety. Families prefer home initiation, which is cost effective and releases hospital bed capacity for use to other services.

– Enhancing Care through Technology 

Winner: Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – The National Collaboration for Integrated Care and Support highlights that partners should have a shared understanding and recognition that information systems and governance are critically important in progressing integration and better care for patients.

Highly Commended: DrDoctor- DrDoctor provides healthcare transformation services through a digital patient layer which automates patient engagement from referral, through the booking process, to collecting outcomes and informing scheduling decisions.

– Partnership of the Year 

Winner: Civica and The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust – partnership in Cito implementation. The trust’s recent, successful roll-out of the Cito clinical information management system was the product of close collaboration on functional requirements and a partnership approach to deployment; giving staff faster online access to patient information at the point of care.

Highly Commended: The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust and Shiny Mind/Cynergy– Shiny Mind: the Health and Wellbeing App for Walton Staff. The Walton Centre’s staff collaborated with Cynergy, to create the smartphone App called Shiny Mind, which supports them with tools to help during a stressful day. The app combines health and wellbeing training with positive messages which users can send to each other every day and access 24/7. 

– Digital Patient 

Winner: Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust – Now We’re Talking for Healthy Minds. The Now We’re Talking campaign was launched in Oct 2018 to increase awareness and referrals into Worcestershire Healthy Minds, a service supporting people with more common mental health issues such as stress and anxiety. The campaign has had a huge impact – with self-referrals almost doubling.

Highly Commended: Lifebox Health – LifeBox Health has successfully created an online pre-assessment tool that is being used in both private and NHS hospitals. It enhances care through technology by reducing surgical risk via a standardised pre-assessment improving patient safety and encouraging their participation

Overall

Winner: Cambridge Community Services NHS Trust – An innovative, new, affordable hearing headset to help children with the most common cause of hearing loss: glue ear (also known as ‘Otitis Media with Effusion, OME’, where fluid/ mucus builds up behind the ear drum during the common cold or an ear infection). The innovative new headset can connect via Bluetooth to a microphone to help children hear at school or home.

Highly Commended: Ingenica Solutions and Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust – To successfully meet and exceed the inventory management element of the Department of Health’s Scan4Safety programme; a unique partnership which has delivered exceptional results and sustainable, long-term change, replicable across the entire NHS.
